I want to thank all of my readers for enjoying my blog enough to subscribe!  It really is such a nice feeling :)  I'm so excited to share all that I have planned for the month of June!  I'll be starting a couple of new features, sharing a DIY, and having a guest post or two as well!  See you then!

Top 5 Thursday: Kate Winslet

Last week I started a new series titled "Top 5 Thursday".  I've decided to make this series all about film.  I'll be sharing lists of favorites from actors/actresses, characters, directors, soundtracks, and so on.  Last week I covered my favorite characters from my favorite actor, Johnny Depp.  You can see the post here if you missed it!  This week I thought I'd share favorite films starring Kate Winslet.  She's an incredibly talented and strong actress and I just adore her in everything I see her in.

Clementine in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
"A couple undergo a procedure to erase each other from their memories when their relationship turns sour, but it is only through the process of loss that they discover what they had to begin with."-IMDB
See the trailer here.
Sylvia Davies in Finding Neverland
"The story of J.M. Barrie's friendship with a family who inspired him to create Peter Pan."-IMDB
See the trailer here.
Sarah Pierce in Little Children
"The lives of two lovelorn spouses from separate marriages, a registered sex offender, and a disgraced ex-police officer intersect as they struggle to resist their vulnerabilities and temptations."-IMDB
See the trailer here.
Hanna Schmitz in The Reader
"Post-WWII Germany: Nearly a decade after his affair with an older woman came to a mysterious end, law student Michael Berg re-encounters his former lover as she defends herself in a war-crime trial."-IMDB
See the trailer here.

April Wheeler in Revolutionary Road
"A young couple living in a Connecticut suburb during the mid-1950s struggle to come to terms with their personal problems while trying to raise their two children. Based on a novel by Richard Yates."-IMDB
See the trailer here.
  *BONUS*
I couldn't leave this list without including her very first film :
Juliet Hulme in Heavenly Creatures
"Two girls have an intense fantasy life; their parents, concerned the fantasy is too intense, separate them, and the girls take revenge."-IMDB
See the trailer here.
What are you favorite films starring Kate Winslet?

At the Movies: Men In Black III

"An alien criminal kills the young Agent K in 1969, altering the timeline, changing the Agency and placing the Earth in danger. Veteran Agent J (Will Smith) must travel back in time to 1969 to before the murder and work with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save him, the Agency, the Earth and humanity itself."-IMDB

This past weekend Matthew and I went with my sister Shelby and brother-in-law David to the movies to see Men in Black III.  I loved the first two and was so excited when I found out that they were making a third one, and it certainly didn't disappoint!  It was fantastic!  It may actually be my favorite of the three, because the story line is SO great!  If you are a fan of MIB I and II then you MUST see this one!

Creature Feature: Sprinkles

Say hello to:
After moving into my apartment in late January of this year, I was saddened by the fact that Brando was so lonely when I wasn't here...which is a lot of the time since I work full time Monday-Friday.  When I would get home from work, he would be his usual overly affectionate self, but he was also crying all the time.  Constantly.  It was so pitiful.  He had never been like that before the move and at first I though maybe it was because of the move and all of the changes.  But after nearly two months of him seeming so depressed, I thought perhaps he needed a pal.  He was used to living with another cat as well as a dog.  As soon as I decided that bringing another kitty into the apartment was the answer, I found out that an outside cat at my moms had kittens a while back and that they had recently started eating solid food.  It couldn't have been more perfect timing!  I knew that I wanted a little girl kitty because honestly...Brando is such a girly-boy cat that I thought it would be best for him to have a gal-pal.  Knowing that calico cats tend to ALWAYS be female, I told my mom to go ahead and bring her since she was coming up with my little brothers for the weekend.  Brando did not have the reaction I hoped for.  He loathed her from the moment he saw her!  He hissed and growled and cowered to the floor as he did so.  Sprinkles on the other hand behaved as most kitten would...she was excited and wanted to play!  We decided to keep them in separate rooms for the weekend so that they could get used to each others scents in the apartment and smell/see each other from under the door.  That was nearly a month ago now and there has been almost no progress!  They live in separate rooms with their own litter boxes and food/water dishes.  We bring them into each others spaces to see each other while we hold onto them.  Sprinkles wants to play with Brando so badly, but Brando just hisses and growls and lays on the floor.  He actually curled up into the fetal position and laid his head on the floor.  It's terribly distressing for him!  I don't know what to do other than keep trying.  I saw the first (and only) sign of progress last night and today.  Before bed last night Sprinkles was poking her paws under the door, and Brando jumped down and got into pounce position.  Instead of charging at the door with a growl and a hiss, he crept over and played with her paws through the door!  He's been doing that today too.  No hissing or growling...he seems to be playing with her!  I've tried letting them see each other though, and he just reverts back to hissing.  Does anyone have any experience with this?  Is there anything you recommend?

Tidbits about Sprinkles:
  • She's named after Angela's cat from The Office.
  • She's competing with Brando for the title "Most Affectionate Cat"
  • She's very playful.  She has two little kitty jungle gyms and she's ALWAYS playing on them!
  • She has a strange little meow she does when she's running around the living room.  It's adorable.
  • If you don't pick her up when she wants you to, she'll start climbing your legs.  Watch out!
  • She always tests her food and water with her paw when she eats or drinks.
  • She LOVES being bathed.  She sits perfectly still and purrs while you soap her up and rinse her off!

Top 5 Thursday: Johnny Depp Characters

When it comes to character actors, nobody does it better than Johnny Depp (in my opinion) and today I thought it would be fun to share a post of my favorite Johnny Depp characters from films I love!  I think the thing I love most about his characters is that they are all so quirky and fun.  I just realized something else...all but one of these films was directed by Tim Burton!
In Edward Scissorhands.  See the trailer here.

In Sleepy Hollow.  See the trailer here.

In Pirates of the Carribbean.

In Alice in Wonderland.  See the trailer here.

In Dark Shadows. See the trailer here. See my post about it here.
What's you're favorite Johnny Depp character or movie?

DIY: Blog Button with Grab Box

Last night I decided to create a few blog buttons with grab boxes and so I thought it would be terrible of me not to post a tutorial on how to make these!  If you've never made one before, I know that it can be quite intimidating.  It's actually pretty simple though and I hope that that shows in my tutorial!

  1. Select a photo that you'd like to use and edit it.  I edit all of my photos on PicMonkey and I definitely recommend it for anyone who's looking for a spectacular FREE photo editing website.  It's super easy and you don't even have to have an account!  So the first thing you need to decide on is the size of your button.  You may have to do a bit of fiddling around to get the size you're looking for, but the most common size is probably 125x125.  I decided to make my button width 240, because it looks nice on my sidebar.  240 is ginormous for a blog button, but I'll be creating more buttons in various sizes to add to my button page (which is accessible via my nav bar).  I'll share with you my PicMonkey editing process to give you an idea of what you can do.  Once your photo is uploaded onto PicMonkey go ahead and re-size the photo to the width of your choice.  The next thing I like to do is go into the effects menu (click on the little chemistry vial image on the far left of the screen) and add whichever effects I like (there are so many to choose from!).  After that I go down to the text menu and add text to my image.   Once I've done those three things I go ahead and save the image to my computer.
  2. Upload your photo to a host website. I use Photobucket and highly recommend it-it makes things soooo easy!  Once you're photo is uploaded to Photobucket (or your image host of choice), copy the image code.  Write it down or paste it into a word document so that you have it close by-you're going to need it, but not yet.
  3. Create the html code.  Don't worry you don't have to be an html whiz to be able to do this step.  It might be a bit tricky, but I'll make it very easy.  The code you'll need is at the bottom of this post.  Replace the words: YOUR IMAGE CODE with the image code you got from step 2.  Replace the words: YOUR WEB ADDRESS with your website address :)  There's the code!  That wasn't too difficult eh?
  4. Add the code to your blog.  I use blogger, so I'm not sure how different this part is for readers who are using Typepad or Wordpress but I'm sure it's quite similar.  You're going to want to go into the dashboard and click on Layout.  Choose "Add Gadget" on whichever column you're wanting your button. You'll want to choose HTML/JavaScript.  Copy and paste your completed code into the content box and save.  That's it!  You've done it!  Enjoy you're new blog button!
I really hope that this is helpful and if you have any problems or questions please feel free to contact me

Here is the basic code that you need to plug your image code and web address into:

<center><a href="YOUR WEB ADDRESS"><img src="YOUR IMAGE CODE" /></a><textarea><a href="YOUR WEB ADDRESS"><img src="YOUR IMAGE CODE" /></a></textarea></center>

Weekend Shopping List

I am so low on groceries it is unbelievable.  I have GOT to start budgeting more wisely!  As much as I love making lists, I am so terrible when it comes to grocery lists. Planning meals ahead of time is something I am definitely adding to my list of things to do (check back for an upcoming blog post on this!).  Until then, here's my weekend shopping list:
  • Cat food
  • Kitty Litter
  • Bottled Water
  • Spaghetti noodles
  • Pasta sauce
  • Almond butter
  • Jam
  • Frozen veggies
  • Fresh fruit (strawberries,bananas,grapes)
Not much of a list, but there you have it!

Places to visit in my town...

I just moved to Fort Worth in late January, and I absolutely love it here!  Although it's MUCH bigger than where I'm from, it's still small enough that I can easily get around without any problems.  If you ever visit Fort Worth here are a few places of interest:
  • Fort Worth Zoo.  I have always been captivated by zoos, and the Fort Worth Zoo is probably one of the best I've been to.  They recently added on a new exhibit called MOLA (Museum of Living Art) that is full of my favorite animals: reptiles!  If you love to visit the zoo, this is definitely a must see!
  • Fort Worth Museum of Science and History.  I love this place!  There is so much to see and it's just neat neat neat.  I always feel like a kid when I visit museums like this...everything is so interesting and before I've finished looking at one thing, something else captures my attention.
  • Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge.  Matthew and I love to go on hikes here.  It's so quiet and peaceful.  I ALWAYS carry my camera when we go.
  • Bass Performance Hall.  Home of the Fort Worth Opera, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and the Texas Ballet Theatre.  We've seen The Nutcracker and Dracula here.  Both were beautiful and I can't wait to go again!
  • Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.  I visited this museum for the first time about two weeks ago-there were so many interesting exhibits.  If you love art, I definitely recommend this museum.
Photo taken at Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge September 2011.
What can I do/see in your town that you consider a favorite?

Prom Photos

My little brother went to his first prom a few weeks ago and had me take pictures of him and his girlfriend.  They had a great time and were really happy with their "pre-prom" photos that I took of them.  I used PicMonkey to edit and I thought I'd share a few of them with you today!  Enjoy!

I'm always trying to improve on my photography so any thoughts would be appreciated!

5 Things I Love About...

My Apartment

  1. It's quiet.  It's nice being on the third floor and having quiet neighbors (or not many neighbors).  Aside from the occasional annoying car with their bass up high driving through at night...all I ever hear are birds chirping and squirrels chattering.  And the rain of course :)  It's great!
  2. It has a 'larger than average' balcony.  My balcony is about half the size of my bedroom...it's massive!  I haven't decorated it yet, but I have some great ideas.  I definitely want to get my hands on some large floor pillows so that I can take a blanket out there and lounge around on my floor pillows while reading a book or even napping :)
  3. There are pretty trees outside my window and balcony.  Finding apartments with lots of big trees everywhere was really difficult to find, but I found them!  There are tall trees throughout the complex and my apartment is right next to one!  I can easily reach the leaves through my window and the edge of my balcony.  There are a pair of doves who regularly perch outside my bedroom window-they're so pretty!
  4. It's just the right size for me.  I ended up picking the smallest floorplan to save myself on electricity bills...and I really like the size.  I have a really nice sized living room area with a built in bookshelf and a vaulted ceiling.  I have a nice little kitchen with everything I need.  My bedroom easily fits my queen sized bed with plenty of space to move around.  I absolutely adore my bathroom.  It has nice wood floors with a huge mirror above the vanity sink with lots of cupboards.  And the toilet/bathroom shower is an extension of that part of it with a door in between.  It's just wonderful :)
  5.  It's ALL MINE!  I've lived in a couple of apartments before, but I always had roommates.  This is my very first place to call my own.  I pay all of my own bills and it feels really nice to know that I'm capable of living alone in my own space and providing for myself.  It's such a great feeling!

Things I Don't Want You To Know

I visited Caitlin's blog To Make Love Stay today and loved her post so I decided I'd do one myself.  Be sure to check hers out by clicking here!
  1. I dwell on bad experiences.  My little brothers dad (who we *happily* havent' seen in 17 years) was an abusive/alcoholic/drug addict that caused my sister and I to have visual and auditory hillucinations for years (among other things) and who beat up my mom on a regular basis.  My boyfriend in highschool was verbally and occasionally physically abusive-and it took my nearly 3 years to kick him to the curb.    I dwell on experiences like these and feel sorry for myself.  I had no control over the first experience considering I was just a little girl, but the second experience I blam on myself.  I'm disappointed in the fact that I took so much of it and it took so long for me to get out of that rotten relationship.
  2. I've become afraid of the dark. I frequently wake up in the middle of the night thinking I've heard something or seen something and it takes me forever to fall back asleep.  I keep the bathroom light on.
  3. I have a creepy collection. Last year I started collected wire-photos of Ted Bundy.  I'm fascinated with serial killers for one...I have loads of books on a lot of them.  If you don't know what a wire-photo is, it's what newspapers used to send around to one another through a special machine (like a fax machine) so that other papers could use them.  The newspaper would then add a dated stamp each time they used the photo as well as a taped clip of the caption under the photo occasionally.  Wire-photos were invented in the 20s and after digital media came around-there wasn't really a need for them anymore.  I have about 11 wire-photos of Ted Bundy now and am always on the lookout for more...they don't creep up very often!  I'm planning getting a new photo binder and expanding my collection to include actors/actresses from films I love.  There are a few Indiana Jones and Star Wars ones that I'm wanting BADLY but they're about $50 each.
  4. I have a hard time getting rid of things.  When I moved to my apartment in January I told myself that I was going to get rid of half the crap I own because I don't use hardly any of it.  I ended up with four large plastic containers full of stuff that I don't know what to do with.  They're just sitting in my living room.  Every time I go through them I make up reasons why I don't want to get rid of something, but there's really no good reason why I need to keep any of it.
If you'd like to do a post like this on your blog please leave a link in the comments-I'd love to read yours!

At The Movies: Dark Shadows

This morning Matthew and I went to see Dark Shadows before I had to go to work and I just LOVE it!!!  The cast was spectacular and the soundtrack was awesome.  I found myself smiling throughout the movie...it was just wonderful!
If a film involves Johnny Depp or Tim Burton then it's an automatic certainty that I am going to enjoy it.  I have also quickly become a fan of Chloe Moretz and loved her character in this film :)  Here's one of my favorite clips:
I can't help but smile at this photo so I had to share it.  I never thought I'd put the words Johnny Depp, Vampire, and Adorable in the same sentence...but I guess I thought wrong. :)
If you get a chance to see a movie this weekend I highly recommend this one! It may not be suitable for small children though so keep that in mind :) Have a great weekend!

Weekly Rituals

  • Until the season ends, Game of Thrones is what my Sunday nights are devoted to.
  • Unless there is just nothing of merit to see at the movies (and there almost always is)-Saturdays are our 'go-to-the-movies' day. (We're changing it up this week though and seeing Dark Shadows today!)
  • Wednesday is "Date Night" for Matthew and I.  We make dinner together and watch a movie.  Wednesdays are becoming my favorite day of the week!
  • I don't have a specific day of the week that I do this on-but I recently started watching Mad Men on Netflix.  I watch it anytime I get a chance.
Wow...I just realized that my weekly rituals revolve around watching TV/Movies.  I should probably read more.  Hopefully when I do an update of this-there will be times that I devote specifically for reading.

Creature Feature: Brando

Say hello to:
In the Spring of 2010 my sister's cat at the time gave birth to four healthy kittens. It was her first (and only) litter and we were set on keeping at least one and finding great homes for the others. My sister decided to keep one for herself and I was to choose one for me. One of the kitties had already been promised to another home so that left 3. My sister chose the cute black and white one because it resembled one she had years ago. I was torn between the orange kitten who was more friendly and outgoing than any other kitten I'd ever met...and the beautiful blue-eyed white kitten who seemed terribly shy and hid everytime a human came into the room. What I really wanted was to keep both of them, but I knew I couldn't do that. I thought about how friendly the little orange one was and how easily he would fit in with a family with small children. A friend of the family who had an 8 year old daughter had been on the lookout for a kitten and when I found out I just knew the orange one belonged with them. The shy white one needed more personal attention and would require patience. He quickly warmed up to me and I can't imagine life without him! I chose the name Brando because he looked just like his papa who was the most handsome cat I'd ever seen. I knew I had to come up with a handsome name and so Brando (as in Marlon Brando) seemed to fit nicely.

Tidbits about Brando:
  • He loves feet.  And shoes.
  • He's a very people-friendly cat and he LOVES attention.
  • He's stuck to me like glue...we're like Forrest and Jenny.
  • He likes to sit on whatever you're doing at the time.  He loves laying on my laptop.
  • One of his favorite places to lounge is in my bathroom sink.
  • If you don't want him hanging out on the edge of the tub while you're bathing-you MUST keep the door closed-there's no stopping him!

Date Night Ideas

  1. Drive-In Movie.  There's a really great Drive-In theatre about an hour south of where I live, and it is sooo much fun!  AND inexpensive.  I just love the whole experience.
  2. Antique Shopping.  Matthew and I love visiting antique stores and almost always find a thing or two to bring home.
  3. Nature Hike/Picnic.  This is technically not a "night" date, but it's probably my favorite on the list.  I'm a weenie when it comes to being in the dark, so this would definitely begin in the morning.
  4. Museum.  I love museums!  Art Museums and Science/History Museums are so so so cool!
  5. Sporting Event.  For me this means Dallas Mavs or Texas Rangers.  Also I'd really like to start going to Roller Derby matches and there are a few leagues around here so it's definitely something I'm planning on.

Wishlist #1

  1. To go back to school to become an Art Teacher.
  2. To be fluent in another language (perferably German).
  3. To visit the Harry Potter theme park.
  4. To learn how to do professional quality Monster/Movie makeup (via the Dick Smith program).
  5. To expand my foreign film collection.

Favorite Websites/Blogs

Favorite Websites:
  • IMDB (Internet Movie Data Base).  This. Website. Is. THE BEST!  I am a major movie-snob and I use this website exclusively for the latest on anything film/actor/actress/director/etc related.  It keeps me up to date on what's in the works.  It's simply fantastic.
  • PicMonkey.  I am in love with PicMonkey.  I edit all of my photos there now.  If you used Picnik in the past-this is pretty much it's replacement.  It's free and I love all of the different features.  I actually like it better than Picnik and I never thought I'd say that.
  • Amazon.  I love shopping online and Amazon always has the best deals.  Aside from the occasional stop at a place here called The Movie Trading Company-I buy almost ALL of my movies from Amazon.  Books too.  And camera stuff.
  • PasteMagazine.  I can't get enough of the articles on this website.  My favorites are the movie related lists.  For example "Kirsten Dunsts 15 Best Performances"
Favorite Blogs:
  • The Dainty Squid.  I have been in love with Kaylah's blog since I first laid eyes on it.  She always always posts interesting stuff and she's just adorable/inspiring.  Checking her blog is part of my regular internet routine.
  • The Movie Snob.  I love reading Larry Taylor's reviews because I generally agree with him.  Great blog/site to read film reviews/critiques.  He also posts some great lists.

What's In My Bag 05/07/12

  1. Herbalife Tea and Multivitamins.  I started the Herbalife program last week and am really enjoying it!  I lost 3 pounds in the first week and had to drop a jean size.  I was totally shocked at how fast it was working for me!  After I complete the first month I may sign up as a distributor.  We'll see :)
  2. Harajuku Lovers: Baby.  This is my absolute favorite perfume.  It's smells so sweet and the packaging is ALWAYS super adorable.  This is the Wicked Style Baby edition.
  3. Ban Deodorant.  I don't normally carry deodorant with me in my bag unless I'll be somewhere overnight-which is why I had it in there this time.  Ban: Shower Fresh is my fav.
  4. Look Ma, New Hands-Hand Lotion.  Working as a pharmacy tech I frequently file through papers and I also wear powdered gloves occasionally.  With all that combined with lots of handwashing-lotion is a must and I LOVE this stuff!
  5. Sandisk MicroMate.  With my 32GB memory card I have to use this handy little gadget to transfer my pictures onto my computer because it isn't SDHC compatible.
  6. 2GB Memory Card.  Until recently, this was my one and only memory card for my DSLR.  Now that I have my 32GB this is my backup.  I doubt I'll need it with all the space on the big one, but just in case!
  7. Lens Cover.  This is my inner lens cover.  I actually have no idea why I'm carrying this around.
  8. Point and Shoot.  This is my Canon Power Shot SD1200 IS.  I LOVE this little camera!  I try to have a camera with me at ALL times and this is so small it's just impracticle not to carry around.
  9. Cash/Debit/ID.  Can't go anywhere without these!

I decided to take some fun photos of my Indiana Jones figurine this weekend capturing a dinosaur.  I like the way they turned out :)
